JOIN GREATER EDMONTON ALLIANCE

ORGANIZE FOR THE COMMON GOOD

GEA is building a vast network of organizational members and individual supporters to create the collective capacity to make the Greater Edmonton Region more just, equitable and sustainable for all citizens.

The Greater Edmonton Alliance (GEA) is a broad-based organization which works to connect, train, and organize the communities of Greater Edmonton across religious, labour, ethnic, class and neighborhood lines to take action for the common good. Our primary goal is to develop local leadership and organized power to work for social justice. We strive to hold both public and private power holders accountable for their public responsibilities, as well as to initiate actions and programs of our own to solve community, economic and ecological problems. We are multi-issue. The issues we work on come from within our institutions, from the concerns of the people.

GEA is unique and effective because of the diversity of our membership and our transcendence of right wing left wing politics. GEA is effective in Alberta’s political context because of our commitment to identify and build from the common interests between groups and organizations that are not typically aligned. We are building broader power because of our commitment to broader relationships.

CELEBRATING 3 YEARS OF SOCIAL ACTION

Since our Founding Assembly in May 2005, GEA has:

GEA WILL BE STRONGER WITH YOUR SUPPORT:

GEA has become a significant force in Greater Edmonton. We have the firm respect and recognition of City Hall and of many established not for profit and business leaders. Imagine what we could accomplish with a stronger membership and financial base.

A BIG VISION

At our 2008 Annual Meeting GEA members ratified the following action agenda:

  1. Affordable Housing - Creating more affordable housing spaces, in addition to making housing utilities more affordable through conservation retrofits in many Edmonton neighbourhoods.
  2. Long Term Care - Working to engage Government MLA’s in direct relationships with long-term care staff and the families who need it to make it more accessible and more dignified.
  3. Shake the Hand that Feeds You - Creating direct relationships between local farmers and organized congregations as well as creating greater access to local food in order to support a sustainable local economy and reduce carbon emissions.
  4. Apprenticeship Fairs for young immigrants to have access to greater opportunities for sustainable living wage jobs in the Greater Edmonton Region.
  5. Sustainable Works Edmonton - A campaign designed to develop a new well paid workforce and to reduce the carbon foot print through retrofits of many residential, small commercial and institutional buildings throughout Greater Edmonton.
  6. Leadership Training designed around small actions related to affordable housing, living wages and local foods.

YOUR RETURN ON INVESTMENT

GEA’s is a bold vision that will require bold, careful and imaginative action. GEA has accomplished a lot with our base of 20 member organizations. Imagine what we can accomplish with twice as many members.

GEA is asking for your support and commitments. These are important times that require new relationships, integrated interests and a renewed commitment to the common good.

There are tremendous benefits to becoming a member and supporter of the Greater Edmonton Alliance.

  1. GEA action campaigns provide important leadership development and public engagement that will help develop and engage new leaders for your institution.
  2. GEA provides a broader network of relationships that allows you to see your values and interests more effectively represented and acted upon in the public arena.
